Man Bites Dog (The Criterion Collection) (1993)
Client Critiques
The Criterion Collection brings film lovers some of the most engaging, difficult pictures ever created. National borders mean tiny to the folks at this DVD company they will release American films as readily as they will European cinema or documentaries about African dictators. Moreover, Criterion does not flinch from controversial films simply because they include controversial themes. Thanks to this firm, we can readily obtain good versions of Paul Morrissey's "Flesh for Frankenstein" and "Blood for Dracula" along with the ultra violent "Robocop." I have yet to completely explore the depths of Criterion's film catalog, but their other discs ought to surely be as intriguing as the titles I have viewed so far. Criterion finally released 1 of my preferred foreign films, the independent little gem entitled "C'est Arrive Pres de Chez Vous," oddly translated as "Man Bites Dog." Made in Belgium a little over a decade ago, this fascinating movie viciously satirizes the media and its like for dramatic violence. Criterion not only presents this movie with a heap of extras, they also restored the film to its uncut form. This is vital because the version I watched nearly ten years ago was missing two scenes that are arguably the most shocking components in the entire film.
Filmed entirely in the style of a black and white documentary, "Man Bites Dog" is an sometimes outrageous excursion into the underground world of a sadistic thug named Benoit, a travelogue of the daily activities and random thoughts of a bloodthirsty sociopath. Most of the time he robs the elderly of their pensions, commits burglaries, drinks himself silly, or kills innocent consumers for no other cause than that he feels like it. In numerous scenes we see Ben instructing the film crew on how to weigh down bodies so they will not float when he dumps the corpses into an abandoned rock quarry. His associates are mainly a rather seedy lot: he quite often visits an aging woman of questionable virtue and hangs out with an obnoxious boxer. Beneficial old Benny is not above suddenly killing a pal in a fit of rage, or giving an old woman a fatal heart attack by screaming at the leading of his lungs into her face. This guy is a piece of operate, but what definitely makes the film painful to watch is how Benoit gradually lures the filmmakers into sharing his gruesome crimes.
In a way, and this is the true genius of "Man Bites Dog," the viewer can from time to time understand why the documentarians develop into involved in Benoit's shenanigans. Even as he commits the most despicable of crimes, this hooligan is truly a charming character with several endearing traits. He frequently waxes philosophic about such disparate topics as architecture and poetry, has a lady buddy who takes him to art galleries, and his generosity to the filmmakers chronicling his life knows no bounds. Benny is often willing to acquire a drink or pitch in to help spend for extra film since he enjoys the firm of his newfound buddies. Watching this guy play with children in the street even though he committed an atrocious crime against a youth in a further scene presents the documentarians, and by extension the viewer, with a moral quandary not easily resolved. Benoit does not represent what Hannah Arendt referred to as the "banality of evil" but rather an "ambiguity of evil," and it tends to make pigeonholing this character at times extremely problematic. To make it even even more challenging for the viewer to hate Benoit, his likeable mother and grandfather seem from time to time. But abhor him you will, especially after seeing the aftermath of a robbery in the suburbs and an encounter with a couple in an apartment after an all-night drunk. "Man Bites Dog" is a difficult film.
Even worse, this movie is sometimes fairly funny in the way only the blackest of comedies can accomplish. Benoit's overdramatic French dialogue is a scream, and a large number of of his views on life are just downright hysterical. You can't assist but laugh when Benoit forces the camera crew to rebury bodies that have suddenly reappeared when the quarry goes dry. I feel 1 of the funniest scenes in the movie occurs when a member of the documentary crew dies as a outcome of Benoit's activities and we see a member of the crew eulogize him on camera. When another filmmaker dies later in the film, this identical guy performs one more eulogy nearly indistinguishable from the initially a single. I have never felt as guilty about laughing for the duration of a film as I have with this one due to the fact I knew I just must not, could not, dared not obtain this amusing, but in the end I just could not aid myself from giggling more than Ben's antics.
The extras on the Criterion disc are not all that impressive. There is a film brief starring the actor who played Benoit that is not that fantastic, an interview with the filmmakers that is rather short and does not reveal a lot about the film, a still gallery, and some reviews concerning the movie. The transfer top quality of the image is outstanding, even though, as are the subtitles for this French language film. As far as I know, we have never ever noticed anything additional from the people responsible for "Man Bites Dog." Possibly these guys were one hit wonders, and if so that is a darn shame. This movie is so brilliantly conceived and executed that it is difficult to imagine that whoever produced it would slide into obscurity.
MAN BITES DOG is, rather basically, a single of the blackest comedies ever created. The documentary following a charismatic serial killer about his every day business consists of some of the most biting satire and perverse irreverence ever put on film. It's also perfectly scripted, directed and acted on a non-existant budget (most of the cast are members of the crew, who created the film whilst at school). Years just before NATURAL BORN KILLERS, these Belgian students made a far smarter and wittier satire of media violence, that challenges our society to look at its morbid fascination with the macabre dead in the eyes. Perhaps you will not like what you see of oneself from this perspective.
This remains the only Belgian film I've observed, and one of the few Belgian cultural artefacts of any nature. A country that can generate a masterpiece such as this surely can not be as negative as everybody says :))

Customer Critiques
This is one of the perfect books I've ever read, and I'm fairly jaded as far as superior writing goes. Chris Haslam is an amazingly superior writer if this is indeed his initially novel. His use of the English language is a joy. He may very well go a tiny also far in his use of similies, but he is surely a master of them. As for the plot, the pace, and the characterizations, they're also just about as fine as I've ever encountered. I do not know who to compare him to, considering that he's written an intelligent thriller with a mix of excitement and literary skills I've under no circumstances seen before. But the book IS about a drug dealer/user (cocaine) in the south of Spain who gets into some critical drug-related trouble, so it will not appeal to everybody.
A druggies trip via Spain with a weak crime plot which is unconvincing even for the stoned. The writer has talent but not a lot of a plot. if he wants to come across out how to write an addict's mystery story with conviction, i recommend Ken Bruen or Ian Rankin.
A cult book, in all probability simply because druggies do not write as well as alcoholics.

Customer Reviews
5 graduate college students, calling themselves the Groovers set out on their last road trip together to dig up Dom ahead of going their separate approaches. A single a loner, one a ROTC, one confused, one a minister, and 1 passed out. Gardner Barnes played by Kevin Costner is the loner that will comprehend he must not have been so distant. Phil Hicks played by Judd Nelson is the ROTC that begins to appreciate life rather than constantly complain about it. Kenneth Waggener played by Sam Robards is confused about giving up a chance at marriage and no matter whether he should really show up for duty in the service. Dorman played by Chuck Bush studied for ministry but is not confident how to approach it. He finds that supporting those about him is the answer. Lester Griffin, played by Brian Cesak, is passed out for most their journey but will wake up just in time for their last night together. The directing, acting, sets, and music are all awesome.
This film was by no means a major hit, but it strikes a chord with most individuals that recall graduating from High School or College and spending a brief time with their friends before going their personal way. The journey in this case is to dig up a bottle not a buddy. The journey is what makes this film wonderful due to the fact we comprehend that life is a journey and the trip is what tends to make it, not getting to the destination. Some scenes are hysterically funny like the Parachute School jump with pilot Truman Sparks played by Marvin J., McIntyre. Other scenes like the wedding are truly poignant. Don't miss the film, it is one particular of Kevin Costner's and Judd Nelson's most beneficial. Fans of the 80s movies will surely take pleasure in it. Although the timeline for the film is 1971, the message is the similar nowadays. Life moves forward, so embrace it. The image and sound excellent on the DVD is good and it consists of some extras. The soundtrack for this is superb if you are fan of rock and new age. Pat Metheny's "It's for you" is a nice touch.
Have you ever taken the ultimate road trip? Have you ever traveled that glorious byway of youth toward some pointless destination? And did you take all those detours down the side roads headed to grand new adventures promising endless fun? Do you bear in mind those specific many people you left behind in their youth who are nevertheless fairly significantly a component of you right now? Have you ever wondered what may have been had you not parted with that special girl who when you might have loved? And could you ever have imagined how your new beginnings would regularly result in such abrupt and melancholy endings?
Have you ever taken the ultimate road trip? You know, the a single from yesterday to tomorrow, from childhood to adulthood, from high school or college to responsibility. Did you tarry along the way? And all the though, did you notice the path home behind you was vanishing? Do you ever wish you could go back to those crossroads in your life, if only for a couple of moments, recognizing what you know these days? Do you cherish your choices? And most of all, do you cherish those unforgettable memories of your youth?
Or do you just like the shape of Texas?
If your fancy dances to any of these themes, then you ought to contemplate dancing this Fandango.
For just about two decades a Kevin Reynolds' classic has remained the most beneficial kept secret in Hollywood. It simply beggars belief. Fandango deserved better. Yes, I know . . . it's a bit sophomoric and far-fetched at times, but behind all the "Animal Residence" humor lies "Massive Chill" substance. If you give it a likelihood, Fandango will do what it does ideal. It will take you residence again, if only for a though. In a best ending, Fandango blends incredible music with such sweet sadness, it cannot fail to stir both heart and soul. So, do not miss this dance. It really is a privilege of youth, and it really is for you.

Grim Fandango: Prima's Official Strategy Guide [Paperback]
Buyer Critiques
Make no bones about it Prima's strategy guide for Grim Fandango written by Jo Ashburn proved to be the ideal remedy for this pretty much (but not rather) lazy gamer! I really like lengthy, involved and challenging games but I hate finding stuck for also lengthy and right here is a guide that provides as significantly (or as small aid) as needed. The technique of tiered answer that become extra particular the stupider you are (and I can be especially stupid quite often!) is not a new idea but the way these clues and hints are set out is absolutely fantastic. They give you adequate specifics to prevent frustration while retaining the game's vital challenge. Here is a approach guide that has been developed by an individual who certainly loves the game and it is beautifully crafted. It also contains a narrative account of Manny's exploits in the Land of the Dead, some complete colour design sketches and the diary of Grim Fandango's creator Tim Schafer. It absolutely enhanced my enjoyment of a excellent game which is the most beneficial compliment I can give to the author.
It has both progressive hints (with the genuine spoilers upside-down, no much less) and a walkthrough written in a sort of brief story format, and some nice samples of storyboard art and cool stuff like that. Even the brief character sketches are amusing -- most of them contain puns that you know following you've played the game.
My only complaint was that the game itself had a handful of truly weird and arbitrary puzzles. I loved the appear, and the characters, and the cut scenes, but I don't see how you could possibly solve the game with no either the hints, or randomly attempting just about every permutation of actions.

Lola's Fandango [Hardcover]
Client Critiques
In my children's room at the library the requests I receive at the reference desk from children and their parents differ broadly. On the subject of dance there's a lot of variety. If youngsters want a picture book about dancing, they frequently know what type of dance they have in thoughts. Ballet. Tap. That sort of issue. Then again, due to the fact the rise of loved ones friendly dance-related tv shows like So You Consider You Can Dance? kids are now discovering that there's a complete world of dances out there that they could possibly by no means have identified about. It gives a gal hope, especially when I get to see books like Lola's Fandango. Right here you have a amazing story with an abundance of Spanish words and terrific art that tends to make you sit up and take discover. If you happen to be looking for a book that is a small bit various, this one's got your quantity.
Items are rough for Lola. Her older sister Clementina has almost everything greater. Initial, there's her awesome name. Then there is her capability to draw. On top of that is her terrific hair, her friends, her area, the list goes on and on. Lola would like to have at least one particular thing to make her particular . . . and then she finds her mother's flamenco shoes. Immediately Lola is intrigued. Her mother doesn't dance anymore, of course, but her father utilised to and he's willing to teach her. In secret then Lola learns to dance, and when her mother's birthday arrives, Lola could have the great gift. But will she have the guts to perform in front of a crowd? The book comes with an audio CD of the text.
When you write a picture book it tends to be very good to have significantly more than a single thought floating about your story. Which is to say, if you are writing a tale like this one and you want to make it about a little girl who learns a new dance, I would highly recommend performing what author Anna Witte does right here. Which is to say, add in the jealous younger sister element. For the reason that Lola is envious of her older sister's life and accomplishments (typical stuff like wanting to draw as well, have as nice a head of hair, have pals more than, etc.) she has the impetus to want to distinguish herself in some way. If the book had been merely a story about a girl who desires to understand to dance and chooses this sort, it would not honestly carry the very same oomph, so to speak.
One element of the book that was intriguing to me was Lola's desire for a polka dot dress to dance in. It's fundamental to me that Lola accept that she will dance for her mother, stage fright fears or no and then receive the polka dot dress as a present. If the dress came too soon then the point of the book might be taken as "you can do anything your heart desires . . . as long as you sport the ideal clothes". Some kids will take away that message anyway, but at least it can be conveniently corrected by basically pointing out to them that Lola agrees to dance prior to obtaining out that there's a present in the supplying.
I was rather taken with Witte's writing in this book also. As a German raised in Spain who has lived in the States for at least eighteen years, she has a very good ear for the image book format. The book reads slightly longer than the younger fare out there. Think Patricia Polacco rather than Kevin Henkes. I like her word options as well. Immediately after staring longingly at her sister's hair the text reads, "Lola looks at herself in the mirror. Her hair is coarse and wiry like a terrier." Not just any dog, thoughts, but a terrier. When Lola basically learns the dance, the book then uses lots of enjoyable terms that sound terrific when read aloud. From the "Toca toca TICA!" of Lola's heels to the "Snap! Snap!" of her fingers and the "Swish!" of her skirt, the book is enjoyable to listen to.
Spanish words are also dipped into the narrative naturally. There are a fair quantity of books with bilingual words and phrases out there that insert mentioned words into their text with all the grace of an elephant with gout. Witte, in contrast, slips the words in exactly where they fit ideal. You might possibly not even discover that they had been there until you reached the finish of the book and found your self confronted with a Glossary of terms. It is worth noting that the book is sold in both an English version and a Spanish version, for those of you with important Spanish language collections.
Text and story are all nicely and very good, but if a picture book does not capture me with its images then I am not interested. Now the artist on this book was a Micha Archer, who has genuinely only carried out one other image book just before (The Sensible Fool). After reading this I can only hope that she'll be performing a lot significantly more image books in the future. In Lola's Fandango Archer employs a kind of Vera B. Williams A Chair for My Mother style. Employing collage she whips up this amazing array of colors, fabrics, designs, and patterns. Amazingly, for all the wide variety, they never ever truly clash. It makes for an eclectic and lively series of images.
The danger of this book? Parents, be prepared for your children to beg for a flamenco lesson or two. This book most certainly wipes the floor with those jazz/ballet/tap dance lessons your children have been taking all these years. How can tutus compare to polka dotted swishy dresses? Tap dance may well be fun at 1st, but the attitude is absolutely completely different from that of a flamenco dancer, no? And when else do you get to wear polka dots? Yes, you take your life in your personal hands when you bring this book into your house. Then once more, it's a entertaining read, covers ground I've not seen covered by picture books before, has superb art, fantastic writing, and lots of Spanish words integrated seamlessly into the text. I'd contact that a rousing achievement general. If you happen to be looking for a bit of dance for your collection above and beyond the usual ken, Lola's Fandango delivers.
For ages four-8.
