fandango n 1: a lively Spanish or Spanish-American dance in triple time ... ; 2: tomfoolery (Merriam Webster's Collegiate Dictionary, Tenth Edition).
Ms. Berdoll has created a cast of characters with lives mired in their desires as deep and sucking as her San Francisco mud and both definitions are fitting. Just who will emerge from the muck of extreme human foolishness with only the loss of expensive shoes is storytelling at its best. Ms. Berdoll's descriptive scenes and clever repartee is always engaging. When Gus says, "I never once believed you was stupid as all that" and Anabella cries, "But I am, Gus, I am!" you nod in (LOL) agreement because you are there! With a nod to Thackeray's "Vanity Fair," many characters merit a "Frankly, my dear, I don't give a damn." Thereby comes epiphany; beyond the immature, impetuous Annabella, the arrogant banker Asher Price, Gus, the stalwart barkeep, the other greedy low-lifes and naïve victims, you realize the protagonist is Folly itself running at full gallop from cover to cover! To fully appreciate such imaginative, insightful writing, see Webster's "tongue-in-cheek."
Ignore the insufficient editing and enjoy the ride.

Another well-written novel by Linda Berdoll. I love her Pride and Prejudice sequels so was excited that she was trying something different. Fantastic portrayal of San Fransisco around the time of the gold rush. Her writing is so descriptive and her character development is amazing; love it. I couldn't put it down for the last 200 pages. They need a little help with editing for the next printing. There were several gramatical errors, but easy enough to figure out on your own. The last several chapters also seemed a little rushed and left me wanting more, but her books always do. Here's hoping for a sequel
